In the heart of the enchanting rolling hills, lived a young shepherd. His existence was unadulterated, and unsophisticated. His only responsibility was essentially to look after his flock of sheep.

Their soft bleating and the murmuring of the breezes among the single tree on the mountaintop were his main companions. Day upon day, looking out for here his wards instilled in him a notion of quiet fulfillment.

But, there were the occasional moments of isolation, when the shepherd boy would long for company. On one such day because of sheer tedium, the shepherd boy devised a naughty scheme.

Tales of wolves preying on sheep had been around for a while in the village. So, the boy chose to leveraged this fear and played a trick on the villagers.

One morning he dashed into the village yelling “Wolf! There is a wolf preying on my sheep!” The scared villagers ran up the hills to offer assistance but discovered nothing threatening.

The boy giggled at the dilemma on their faces. This trick persisted for a couple of more days. However, one morning, a real wolf actually attack the flock. The shepherd boy dashed for help, shouting “Wolf, Wolf!” But this time, no one showed up.

Frustrated and alone, the boy fought against the wolf but managed to rescue only few of his sheep. Devastated, he returned to the village only to receive a lesson on honesty and the results of crying wolf.

His tale of this shepherd boy has been passed down generations as a mediaeval parable to teaching the importance of honesty, the consequences of lying and the dangers of crying wolf. Moreover, it stresses how trust once violated, is hard to regain. It's a story as appropriate today as it was anciently.
